The hottest movie in the Pongal circuit is Vijay’s Villu produced by Ayngaran International. It is the only film that exhibitors are willing to pay reasonable MG, while other films they are only taking the bookings.

As of now the release schedule is as follows-
AVM’s A Aa E Ee on Friday, January 9. The buzz on the “feel good family movie” is good, due to the 360 degree publicity campaign carried out by the producers. It is releasing worldwide in 85 screens, which is impressive for a small film.

Ayngaran International’s Villu, is releasing in nearly 432 screens worldwide on Monday, January 12. It is a very wide release with 155 of them in overseas markets, the highest ever for a Tamil film. In Kerala, a Vijay fortress it is releasing in nearly 70 screens like a big Mohanlal or Mammootty film! The film releasing two days before the festival day is going to take a gargantuan opening.

Sun Pictures has already bombarded its viewers with Padikkathavan trailer. The Dhanush-Tamannaah starrer will release in 250 screens worldwide, Dhanush’s biggest ever release. A lot is riding on the film releasing on Pongal Day January 14, for Dhanush, as he is on the verge of a hat-trick of hits.

Raj TV’s Kathal Na Summa Illa has announced more than a week back that they will be releasing for Pongal and has also published a theatre listing. The film may have only a limited release on Pongal Day, Jan 14, as theatres prefer the biggies.

Captain Vijaykanth’s Engal Asan is also scheduled to release on Pongal Day, January 14, all over Tamilnadu. The film is getting more theatre bookings from B and C than the A centers.
The above five films have got theatre bookings in most places, while Guru En Aalu, Newtonin 3am Vidhi, Perumal, which had also announced Pongal release has now backed out due to lack of screens.

What is this really happening down here in Tamil film industry? Why do Director Prabhu Deva and his team members want to promote their film ‘Villu’ so cheaply? If they’re looking for a good promo, better they could’ve released these scenes on TV Channels with a decent approach.

Couple of stunts sequences with duration of 14minutes from Villu has been uploaded in youtube.com… Below the clippings, you would watch clip timing on; it’s none other than editing screen. They unit members have leaked those sequences from editing table. How come such a thing can happen without the concern of director who continually sits around there in the process?

Apart from good films these films helped to explore my versatility and showcased my talent to the world and kept me where i am today. By the grace of god We have given some of the best musical blockbusters and never thought our combination would create such magic when we started our career and it still surprises us even after 8 years…. apart from others, his movies have played a vital role so far.

I have a very good respect for Mr. Gowtham Menon and in return he has reciprocated the same. But now, things have gone sour that it’s better for us to part ways as good friends leaving behind some beautiful memories. With a heavy heart I have to take this decision on behalf of us. I know this might disappoint my fans, music lovers and well wishers in the industry. But, it’s best for us to leave it at this, since i always believed that to create soul stirring music, the bond between a Music composer and the director is vital. Once it’s lost, it is difficult to get back. So I take this opportunity to thank Gowtham Menon, our team, media and my fans who made the music of Vaaranam Aayiram a memorable album in the history of Tamil film music and I wish him all the best.

Aascar Ravichandran's Tamil movie, Vaaranam Aayiram (A thousand Elephants), directed பி Gautam Vasudev Menon is almost a love-story with Surya, and no one but Surya at it's epicentre.

Gautham Menon has crafted a moving story, calculated to describe in the minutest details the story of an ideal father: Krishnan is a merry, strong individual who sweeps Malini off her feet (the Mundhinam Parthene song sequence is a rollicking riot from the 70s, with even the old Spencer's Plaza painstakingly re-created digitally). The moment they set eyes on each other, they know that their fate is bound sealed. Years roll, and there appears Surya, their son -- who moves through life, experiencing the same kind of love with மேக்ன.

Surya has obviously been on a roll. For those who thought a thirty-something could never go back to being a 17-year old, here's a newsflash: with his paltry moustache and perky enthusiasm, Surya's perfect.

As a love-struck young man who falls flat on his face for Sameera Reddy, he's adorable. As a drug addict faced with life's greatest trials, he's marvellous. But when he appears on screen as six-pack moulded Major, the whistles hit the roof.

In every instance, he's subtly altered his body language, the expression in his eyes, the indefinable something that marks the difference between a father and son -- and even in the various stages of a son's life, he's managed to alter himself. This one is clearly is magnum opus among the films he's done so far.

Sameera Reddy is buxom, full of life and creates a pang in your heart. Divya Spandana earns your respect with her sober demeanour. And Simran, as Malini, fits her role to the hilt. Sometimes you wonder if this was once the heart-throb that acted in skimpy outfits with Surya himself -- and you have to laud her for how well she's done her job.

Harris Jeyaraj's songs have already become chart-busters; his background score gels well with the movie.

Rathnavelu's camera is smooth at certain times; gives a jerky feel at others, creating the impression that you're watching an intimate scene within a family -- and both work.

So, aren't there any pitfalls? Is this Gautam Menon's beautiful, perfect classic? Hardly. Yes, it's a very moving tribute to a perfect father and loving son; the screenplay does move swiftly in the first half -- but at times, the father grows too perfect; the son too loving. Krishnan is so completely the ideal of a father-figure that you wonder if such men actually exist in real life.

More than half the conversation is in English too, and it's generally up-market -- a non-urban audience might not relate too easily to this film.

At three hours, this one is too long -- a healthy snip would have made for much better viewing. Towards the end, you wonder if so much detail really is necessary.

But if you ignore the lagging last hour, some dialogues and too-ideal situations, the movie is clearly a movingly visualised tribute to fathers and sons by Gautam, and beautifully portrayed by Surya, a brilliant actor.

It might be just a feather in Gautam's hat. As for Surya, it's an ostrich plume, a justified triumph.

Finally after a lot of compromises producer V.Ravichandran, Tamilnadu theatrical rights owner Dhayanidhi Alagiri, earlier rights owner Gemini Film Circuit and Gautham Menon decided to bury their differences and release the film.
The overseas prints of the film have left the Chennai lab on Monday evening, further confirming its Friday release worldwide. Once again print ads in Tamil papers (which were suspended for a brief period) have started appearing from Monday announcing the release date.
The advance booking in Chennai city where it is releasing in 10 screens starts on Wednesday morning. A big red carpet premiere of the film for charity is going to be held on Thursday evening.

Dharani replaces Gautham Menon in Ajith's movie

In a sudden development, Gautham Vasudeva Menon's contract with Sivaji Productions to direct Ajit's next film has been terminated!
It has come as a bolt from the blue, as Gautham was busy with checking the prints of Vaaranam Aayiram and settling issues regarding the film's Friday release!
Now the latest we hear is that Sivaji Productions has roped in Dharani to direct their Ajit venture, and shooting would start sometime in December.
Dharani has been asked to complete a script which will pander to the taste of Ajit fans, a typical mass masala.
As per our sources, trouble started brewing between Gautham and Ajit, almost a month back, over the delay in completing the script of the film. Gautham wanted to try out something different with Ajit, a realistic thriller about a killer and an extortionist.
The story was loosely based on Abu Salem- Monica Bedi affair, with Ajit playing a petty hoodlum from Tuthukudi called Sura who becomes an international criminal through extortion and kidnapping.
Later he meets a Kollywood actress Ragini to be played by Sameera Reddy, and falls in love.(hence the title Surangani). She joins him in his criminal activities (a la Bonnie and Clyde?), before a policeman (to be played by Prabhu) starts a manhunt for the deadly duo.
Everybody was kicked about the one line story, till things went awry between the star and his director. It seems Gautham's comment at the Vaaranam Aayiram audio launch that "Surya is the most versatile actor in Kollywood" did not go down well with a section of actors in the industry.
Soirces close to Ajit say that Gautham took Ajit for granted, did not pander to his star ego, and did not meet the star on a regular basis which also led to a lot of misunderstanding.
Later it was said that the story will not be lapped up by Ajit fans as their hero is shown as an extortionist, which will go against his image. So Sivaji Productions have now chosen Dharani over Gautham, as he understands the nuances of making star movies.
For Dharani who has given mega hits like Dhil, Dhool and Ghilli, it will be his first film with Ajit.

Selvaraghavan to direct Dhanush

Post production work of Selvaraghavan’s Aayirathil Oruvan is yet to be completed. But Selvaraghavan has started his next project which has his brother Dhanush in the lead. The film is titled Idhu Malai Nerathu Mayakkam has Andrea as the heroine.G V Prakash is composing the music while Ramji will handle the camera. Kola Bhaskar will be editing this film. The film is produced by his sister Dr Vimala Geetha under the banner of RK Productions. It will be shot in and around Chennai and completed in less than three months on a budget. Actress Nayanthara is the “craze of Kollywood” these days, especially after the release of the movie AEGAN. In a TV interview she got into a heated argument with the anchor person when he said she is taking the “path of obscene in order to shine in Tollywood”.
Nayanthara responded by saying he must figure out the difference between obscene and beauty using his knowledge. She also asked that she has beautiful face and body given by god and what is wrong in showing it.
